President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed
that his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan
signed some trade agreements with China
and he has vowed to follow up on them.
Leadership reports that the president said
this to Xinhua which is a Chinese news
agency, prior to his state visit to China.
Buhari noted Nigeria and China have a strong
economic and trade cooperation and that it
was a developmental opportunity Nigeria
cannot afford to lose.
He said his administration was committed
towards agreements Nigeria had with
Chinese firms on railway, roads and
hydroelectric dam projects.
He said : “China has the technical and financial
capacity and the experience of development
while retaining the goodwill to help Nigeria.
So, really, this is an opportunity Nigeria cannot
afford to lose,” Buhari said.
“In spite of being the largest economy in
Africa, Nigeria is still badly in need of these
projects, which China, as the world’s second-
largest economy, has the capacity to
undertake.”
According to Daily Trust, he president said
the “opportunities that present themselves for
us … are virtually limitless.”
He said Nigeria was ready for industrial
development, especially in manufacturing
and textile industries.
On the issue of unemployment, he said non-
oil sectors need to be explored and
developed.
“The best way to tackle unemployment is to
develop agriculture and the mining industry,
which China has the capacity to help. Some
Chinese enterprises have already been
involved in the mining industry in Nigeria’s
northern provinces.”
